Charles Freger- Wildermann Series
I have admired Freger's photographs for sometime, in particular his Wildermann series that depicts traditional, ritualistic costumes from nearly 20 different European countries. Each costume has it's own meaning and plays a part in different celebrations, and I am particularly drawn to how the costumes appear to be made from natural mediums such as straw, fur and horns. I also think the photos themselves against the stark landscapes emphasis the scale and terror of the costumes, and taking some photographs of my own costume may play a part in my FMP.

Axel Hoedt's collection of photographs, "Dusk" also captures bizarre and intriguing carnival activities, and again offer inspiration for any photography I want to take place. I think what drew me to create a costume is a general interest in the bizarre, and also the feeling of freedom that comes with wearing a costume/mask. Also these kind of costumes that are used in festivals I think strike a chord with me because they are worn and probably made by people who are not artists, and I have always had this interest in crafts, folk art and outsider art.

In terms of shape George suggested that I looked at Issey Miyake, who's fluid shapes and strong silhouettes bring a more contemporary inspiration to my research. I think looking at his designs will bring another edge to my work, and it's beneficial for me to explore ideas outside of craft/folk art. The dynamic photographs taken by Francis Giacobetti also portray a different method of displaying the costumes, using contemporary dancers against a bright, white background- which differs hugely to the local villagers wearing homemade costumes in the Scandinavian countryside!

George also brought Marcel Dzama's costumes to my attention, and I think this is particularly relevant to my FMP as his costumes are so intertwined with his illustrations, and you can completely tell these two different mediums are created by the same artist- as I want my FMP's costume and illustrations to be cohesive with each other.
