KICKSTARTER PITCHES

We picked a Kickstarter video from the 'Art' section as we wanted to look at a pitch that would be relevant to us and our practice, and we could assume that we are the intended audience for such videos.

We immediately saw a pitch titled: Baltimore's First Risograph Print Shop (at PaperBase), and from the title we knew this would be relevant to our interests.

TONE & MOOD

The immediate tone of the video is:

  • Friendly
  • Personal
  • Trendy

The music sets an upbeat tone for the pitch and does not distract from the video itself. From the content and visual themes we could tell that although the video is very designed and polished, the kickstarter itself is for a non-corporate/small business/creative company that puts the emphasis on enjoying making things and teaching skills to the community

WHAT THE PITCH INCLUDED

The pitch included an introduction to the people behind PaperBase and a description of what they are and what they do. They go on to say what they want, how their practice has encouraged them to try to grow, and how the money raised will help them. They also show the rewards that are on offer once you donate. Visually the pitch had no narration or voice over, and featured hand-drawn elements.

WHAT IS EMPHASISED

The pitch uses 'the power of three' ( we love to print, we love making things, we love to teach) to emphasise what they care about and outline the ethos of the company (friendly, personable etc.) The cohesive design and aesthetic of the pitch also highlights their creative skills, and shows the audience that they are skilled in their profession. Typography is also used throughout the pitch to emphasise certain words (in particular we noticed 'affordable & accessible'- which again cements their beliefs). The friendly/happy/homemade nature of the pitch is emphasised by the anthropomorphism of their risograph machine, Ralph, as well as other design choices, such as the stop motion introduction and the hand drawn elements throughout the video.

VISUALS

The visual aspect of the pitch is highly important, not only because its a reflection of a visual industry (printmaking and design) but also because there is no speech in the video. It is illustration based- with only the opening featuring footage of the two business owners (Emily and Sarah) and even this footage has been edited to give it a stop-motion effect. The overall design is on trend, with an indie/hipster kind of feel! The illustrations that feature are sweet and inoffensive, and this is teamed with a fresh and stylish limited colour palette to tie the whole video together. Ralph, the risograph machine, has been illustrated and made into a character for the pitch, to show he is an important member of the team as well as the core reason why they want to raise money (to fix Ralph). The video itself is short and sweet at 1 minute 30 seconds long, which meant we could re-watch it many times to make notes and not get bored of it. Because the structure was so clear the video was very concise and we felt like we knew exactly who they were and why they were on kickstarter.  We also think they were very aware of who their audience is, as the pitch really reflects the indie/alternative risograph/zine community.

OTHER FEEDBACK

Good structure, very clear
No glimpse of the studio where they worked or how they make work
Would have been good to see what space they work in
Almost just like a well designed powerpoint presentation.

NOTES FROM OTHER GROUPS CHOSEN PITCHES

Casey's group (Scurry)
  • All visual- emphasises the artwork
  • I had no idea what they were trying to make

  • Quite long video for no talking
  • We don't meet the author
Chris' group (The Slow Motion Camera Company Limited)
  • Introduction- meet the creator
  • very technical
  • slightly flat delivery
  • a lot of information that is for a specific audience
  • features reviews which is useful
Harry's group (Surfboard)
  • Dynamic introduction- music and camera angles are appealing
  • professionally shot
  • meet the father/son team- also personal
  • technical explanation
  • nice visual close ups
  • don't know how much to donate, only one reward?

Jordan's group (Fidget cube)
  • Funny spoof of medical advert
  • I liked the subtitles, makes the video inclusive
  • Cut to explanation which jarred the flow of the pitch should have ended at the joke advert
  • Interesting 'Apple' themed display of the item and what it features- bold and clear
