LIVE SCRIBING WORKSHOP

In a group of 5, which consisted of Esther, Emma, Sophie and myself, we each went around the table and talked about our final major project whilst someone 'live scribed' what we were saying. Sophie drew for me, I drew for Esther, Esther drew for Emma and Emma drew for Sophie. After they gobbled down their bacon sandwiches we began.

I spoke about my final major piece first, using these basic elements and notes to prompt me:

Theme

  • Folk tales/urban legends
  • local tale- "who killed the bear"
  • exploring storytelling

Final outcome

  • costume with illustrations
  • maybe audio

Audience

  • Older so I can explore darker themes
  • Interactive quality also makes it interesting for children

Research

  • Listening to local stories
  • Folk art
  • Crafts

Inspiration

  • British folk art
  • Charles Freger

Purpose

  • To tell a story
  • intriguing/ frightening

Methods

  • Costume making/mask making
  • Textiles- weaving, tapestry
  • Natural materials
  • Limited colour palette for illustrations

Experiments

  • Allow time to see what methods work
  • Photography in costume

Content

  • What the story is about
  • The three different elements of the story- costume/illustrations/audio

As I spoke, Sophie started scribing- she began with a general title in the middle of the sheet " Costume & Story" then drew out from there. I first explained what the final product will be, a large costume of a bear hung from the ceiling, based on the local tale of 'who killed the bear' from the Forest of Dean.

(pink) The story of the bear in the forest of dean
(blue) Maybe taking photos of me in the costume and drawing from them- or seeing if I could collaborate with someone on the photography degree?
(yellow) The product, the costume and the open cloth body that people can climb inside
(peach) The set of illustrations that will go with the costume
(grey) The audio inside the costume
(grey) weird/dark subject matter for adult audience

I think I spoke quite quickly and I could have taken my time so Sophie didn't feel like she had to keep up and rush. However through talking out loud I still came up with new ideas, for example having photos taken of the costume in a forest, maybe seeing if I could collaborate with a photography student to create some images and then maybe use them to draw from as part of my experiments? or even final image to be used in the exhibition. I also want plenty of time to experiment with different textile methods, and my next job will be to create a schedule so I can clearly see what my next steps are.

Next I drew for Esther,  and I used only a few pens as I wanted the whole thing to look cohesive- although I could have used colour coordination to relate to different elements of Esther's pitch.

I really enjoyed scribing, and I liked the final outcome! I tried to convey the fact it was fairytale related, the final product would be a book and possibly a poster, the audience would be for children but not too babyish for adult. I also suggested the artist Angela Barrett to Esther to look at as she seemed like a relevant illustrator- this is also represented by the Snow Queen in the corner. The goal to fill the page was helpful as it meant we asked for questions and got more information from the speaker.
